Our story began with an unexpected message on Instagram—one that suddenly flipped my dull, ordinary evening upside down. I, Jake, was lounging on the couch, aimlessly scrolling through my phone when I noticed a message from Ryan. It had been ages since I’d last heard from him. Ryan had always been tough and level-headed, but that night, every single word he wrote was soaked in anger and sadness.

He wrote to me anxiously: “Jake, you’ve got to do something—things are really messed up! My girlfriend and I had been saving up to start a life together.
